George Preston Marshall born October 11, 1896, was an American businessman who founded the National Football League’s Washington Redskins. He started the team as the Boston Braves in 1932 and remained the organization’s principal owner until his death in 1969.

Marshall, a racial segregationist, was the last NFL owner to integrate African Americans into a team, finally doing so in 1962 on duress from the federal government, who threatened to ban use of D.C. Stadium, which they owned until he did.

Marshall was born in Grafton, West Virginia, to newspaper owners Thomas Hildebrand Marshall and Blanche Preston Marshall.  When he was a youngster, his family relocated to Washington, D.C., after his father purchased a laundromat there.

Marshall went to Friends Select School, where he played baseball, and then to Randolph–Macon College for a short time before dropping out at the age of 18.
